Is the Elephant and Castle roundabout really disastrous? On the surface buses and cars can easily negotiate the [very] busy intersections and in my experience it's actually quite efficient at getting large numbers of people through the area. Granted cycles have perhaps a slightly risky path through, but there are alternative routes for the more careful. Also, in my experience, the subways are so well used that they are pretty safe. You're rarely in the main subways by yourself. The proposals for a flat T-junction fill me with fear as I look forward to long traffic jams that were never there before. Your comment: "it might slow down someone’s car journey" suggests that only a few would be affected. Far from it, as the area is the only way to get through from North Southwark (Walworth) across the river.

Believe me, I'm all for public transport - but as yet, without Cross-River Tram and other such schemes (which I highly welcome) I'll continue to use the car.
